A Summary of “Flowers for Algernon” by Rosemary Trellis

Flowers for Algernon is a series of books and videos on the French pastry chef, Dominique Ansel. Dominique started learning to cook because his parents always made homemade pastries, cakes and quiches for their friends and family. When he was still a little kid, he wanted to follow in his parents footsteps and become a professional chef like his father. During his high school career, however, he realized that he lacked the intelligence and social skills to be successful in a highly competitive field like baking. He dropped out of school, changed his name, and began a long odyssey back to school, where he struggled with learning new things and facing new challenges.

In his first novel, Flowers For Algernon, Dominique Ansel creates a complex character that tries to balance his ambition with his lack of intelligence, his love for his sister, Corin, and his passion for cooking for his friends. The main character, a test subject, struggles to prove his worth to the professor who assigned him the book and to his father, fearing to disappoint them both. He does manage to do so, but then must face a new obstacle when the book’s main character falls in love with the same woman.
